On Jan. 1, 2012, the utility's 46,000 electric customers saw rate increases of 4.7 percent. In May, Lewis told a City Council committee that he expects to ask for further electric hikes of 5.5 percent effective Jan. 1, 2013.

MARIETTA Marietta Power and Water's bottom line for the fiscal year that ended June 30 was off a staggering 70 percent, to $2.5 million from $8.4 million in fiscal 2011.

"Electric, water and sewer costs will continue to increase over the next five years," Lewis said. "Environmental regulations and required upgrades to water and wastewater systems, as well as continued environmental pressures on coal fired power plants will continue to push costs higher for consumers."

Marietta Power and Water has 46,000 electric customers and 17,000 water and sewer customers. About one quarter of all electric customers live outside the city limits.

Electric sales for the year totaled $105.1 million, up 2 percent from 2011, when they brought in $103.3 million. Sewer sales were $18.2 Air Force Max 2018 Black

The increase in income was partly the result of rate increases that took effect Jan. 1, 2012, on all three of its service lines: electric, water and sewer. The utility has already warned customers to expect even higher increases come Jan. 1.

The utility is a moneymaker for the city, contributing $11.5 million into city coffers this year, allowing the city to keep property taxes low. Mayor Steve Tumlin chairs the BLW.

Also, "as is often the case, weather had a significant effect on electric sales," he said. The summer of 2011 was much less severe than the record breaking temperatures of summer 2010. And this past winter was "extremely mild," he said.

General Manager Bob Lewis said the fiscal 2012 figures are a result of a substantial increase in wholesalers' supply costs, coupled with a modest increase in revenues.

In the fourth quarter, from April 1 through June 30, the utility's bottom line was off by a whopping 129 percent from the same quarter the year before, to a loss of $333,813, from a positive $1.1 million in 2011.
